Waterlase Trial Program: Transforming My Practice With BIOLASE Dental Lasers

By: Dr. Amanda McMurphy

I participated in the BIOLASE Waterlase Trial Program (WTP) earlier this year, and the experience changed the way I approach dental treatments and procedures, helping both myself and my dental practice improve.

I’ve always been intrigued by laser dentistry, and after hearing about the WTP from my husband who owns a Waterlase dental laser, I decided to take part in BIOLASE’s unique training and education program to see what the technology could do for me as a clinician and my patients.

Wide Array of Applications

With hands-on training and expert speakers, my experience at the WTP was transformative. By practicing on simulated tissue, I discovered the dental laser was easy-to-use, efficient, and provided extremely precise results. I was amazed by the speed and wide array of applications for treatments I hadn’t previously considered. This was a game-changer in my mind. I couldn’t stop thinking about the ways the laser would improve the quality of care my practice could provide. After the initial two-day training I was officially hooked and invested.

Enthusiastic Reactions

After learning about the benefits, everyone at my practice quickly became excited about the new technology. They were eager to get their hands on the Waterlase dental laser and appreciated how quick and easy it was to adapt the way we approach treatments, even cutting some procedure times in half. Patients were also enthusiastic about treatments, with the Waterlase replacing drills and scraping tools, resulting in more comfortable, less invasive treatments.

BIOLASE dental lasers have expanded my practice’s capabilities, allowing us to keep more procedures in-house. I have taken full advantage of the many applications, including, cavity preparations, crown lengthenings, gingivectomies, frenectomies, fillings, troughing, and more. The technology has also been very useful in soft-tissue procedures where I would have difficulty reaching the same level of precision with a drill or the need to use a local anesthetic. The level of precision is astounding! This comes in handy, especially on younger patients, that have difficulty sitting in the chair for long periods. The results have been extraordinary for the entire practice.

Advancing My Practice

After experiencing first-hand how dental lasers can elevate treatments, I now reach for my Waterlase daily. The level of care we provide has been elevated and our patients can feel it too. To anyone considering the WTP, I would say go for it, try something new that benefits your practice and enhances your patient care. The unique training is an excellent opportunity to learn how dental lasers are becoming the new gold standard of quality dental care.

About Amanda McMurphy, DMD

Amanda McMurphy’s story comes from small-town America, an aspiring youth who sought to help others by taking care of them, nurturing them, and being a protector of her friends and family members. Always carrying the desire to help others and to be of service to her community, Amanda found her calling in dentistry, falling in love with the combined efforts of improving people’s health, increasing their cosmetic sense, helping to build their self-confidence, and adding to their longevity, all in one.

A native of Meridian, Mississippi, Amanda McMurphy attended Meridian High School. Then she went on to earn an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene at Meridian Community College shortly after. It was there that she discovered her love of dentistry.

Displaying perseverance and a strong work ethic, Dr. McMurphy worked as a dental hygienist in Starkville while completing a Bachelor of Science degree at Mississippi State University. Through that effort, she realized that becoming a dentist was not only her love, but her true calling, and so she went on to complete her education at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. There she earned a Doctorate in Medical Dentistry and received the “Best of Prosthodontics” award. Her prestigious and hard-won award was a testament to McMurphy’s innovation in the design, creation, fitting, and cosmetics of dental implants.

Dr. McMurphy met her husband, Austin, while in dental school, and they married in 2015. Moving to Biloxi in 2016, Amanda started working for Broadwater Dental and was quickly put in charge of the Biloxi office. By February 2018, Austin and Amanda welcomed their firstborn, a beautiful baby girl named Sloan. Just two short months later, Amanda purchased Broadwater Dental-Biloxi and proudly continues to serve her patients under her new business name, McMurphy Family Dentistry. In April 2020 they welcomed a second daughter, Sawyer.

Dr. McMurphy’s vision is to provide top-quality service to her community. Amanda strongly emphasizes the value of empowering patients by educating them so that they can make knowledgeable decisions regarding their best practices in oral health. She and her team work to create a calm atmosphere and a pleasurable experience for all of their patients.
